Strategize
Make it Awesome and Accessible: The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), the leading organization for the development of web standards, asked that we build a site for their first annual developer conference in 2011. In order to appeal to a crowd of devs proficient in the use of cutting-edge web technologies, it was important to utilize tools that met their standards while upholding the WCAG-2 guidelines of accessibility.
Conceptualize
Appealing to All Ages and Stages: In order to attract a wider audience of developers the client asked that the design have a more youthful appeal. We worked together to create an aesthetically pleasing format that didn’t detract from key conference information. The style is slightly retro and simplistic, yet modern enough to appeal to a crowd that spends most of their day working on the web.
Execute
Smoothly Navigate to Live Content: Along with being accessibility compliant we used a smooth scrolling style and fixed-position navigation so that all the content was a snap to find. The paralaxing W3C Conference logo added some additional visual interest to the clean design, which the client enjoyed so much they even used the image for some awesome conference swag. Of course we couldn’t have done it without the power of HTML5 along with the help of Javascript. We also seamlessly integrated the Twitter feed for up-to-date coverage of the conference. Finally, we embedded the live stream of the conference using Flash and Microsoft Silverlight, depending on the device capabilities of the user.
Maintain
Every Good Show Needs an Encore: Once the conference was over, we created on-demand, fully downloadable videos available in the Presentations section that utilize HTML5 video tags. Overall, it was an exciting event to be a part of and we can’t wait to work with W3C again on future projects.
